Historical Note: Jimmy Carter's administration was responsible for creating the first large-scale jazz production on the White House's South Lawn. This event, which marked the 25th Anniversary of the Newport Jazz festival, included 800 guests and over 50 jazz musicians. Although jazz had been an important American art form for more than half a century, President Carter's public identification of jazz was deeply significant.

'Years later, toward the end of his presidency, Jimmy Carter held a jazz festival on a lawn of the White House. It wasn't one of those star performances at a state dinner, or the kind of honors ceremony at which Richard Nixon had the chutzpah to play a two-piano duet with the ever-gracious Duke Ellington.
Carter was a jazz fan. In his introduction, he told of how he had, before becoming an eminence, frequented jazz clubs, and he said something no other president had said before: jazz did not have the stature it deserved in its native land because of the racism here.
George Wein had orchestrated an intriguing sequence of performers-from Eubie Blake to Max Roach and Dizzy Gillespie. At the end, Dizzy cajoled the president to sing the Salt Peanuts refrain as he and Max accompanied the chief executive on that bop anthem.
A number of cabinet members were in the front seats throughout the concert. One of them, listening impassively, was Attorney General Griffin Bell, in private life a powerful Atlanta attorney, who for years since has been a partner in one of the most successful law firms in the country, and a sometime presidential adviser.
When Cecil started his set, Bell leaned forward and became immobile, fixing his attention on the kinetic pianist. When Cecil hit the last thunderous notes, he made one of his high-speed exits, rushing into the shrubbery. The Attorney General leapt off his seat and chased Cecil until he cornered him.
Later, I asked Cecil, 'What the hell did he want?'
'He wanted,' Cecil said matter-of-factly, 'to know where he could get some of my records.'
Throughout his life in jazz, Cecil continues to spellbind or infuriate listeners. As I recalled in Jazz Is, "After a Cecil Taylor concert in California at which 3,000 people gave him standing ovations several times during the course of the performance, the distinguished [late] Los Angeles critic Leonard Feather declared that 'anyone working with a jackhammer could have achieved the same results.'
--Nat Hentoff

Technical Note: This was one of NPR's first national live broadcasts, and the reel part recorded on and old Sony reel deck. This post should be the complete version of White House Jazz Festival 1978.

La Festa di Radio3 - Materadio 2012

Matera is ready to host the the second edition of Materadio. Having told the story of our city and our people in 2011, this year, along with Radio3, we will look at Europe and its complex economic context as a step to our candidacy for ECOC 2019.

Inviting authoritative artists, intellectuals, policy makers and journalists from all over Europe, we hope to capture the significance of being at the centre of the Mediterranean and of Southern Europe. And at the same time we would like to reveal the creative languages sculpted in layers on the walls of the Sassi, the Casa Cava, the churches and the tufa-stone quarries scattered throughout the Murgia Park and in the 18th century buildings of Matera – and indeed in the history of the whole of Basilicata. The Materadio programme is extended to the whole region.

The headquarters are in Matera, but the activities extend to the 4 creative centres of the regional project Visioni Urbane, 4 cardinal points of Basilicata: Pisticci, Tito, San Paolo Albanese and Rionero. Each of them will host one of the 4 EU nations we have involved: Finland with Turku - ECOC 2011, Portugal with Guimaraes - ECOC 2012, France with Marseille Provence - ECOC 2013 and Bulgaria, with Sofia - candidate city 2019.

North, South, East and West of Europe will weave their experiences together, giving rise to a fruitful exchange with the local creative community according to the spirit of the EU. In the programme we have also included the radios of the relevant cities and nations in order to broaden the experience and stimulate reflections on our idea of future, culture and Europe.

--Salvatore Adduce, Mayor of Matera and President of Matera 2019 Committee

The 33rd International Jazzfestival in Saalfelden 2012

As the tradition wants, during the last week of August, the creative jazz-avantgard moves to Tyrolean Alps, in Saalfelden, where the most famous festival in Europe is celebrated and now it has reached its 33rd edition. The recurring structure is composed by two en-plein-air stages and two closed stages in theaters.

The 'City Concerts' takes place during the late afternoons in the town square with some groups of fusion, world music and pop (for example, Italy was represented by Yo Yo Mundi); the 'Alp Concerts' gives more space to folk music. The closed events are divided in 'Short Cuts' and 'Main Stage': the first, that take place in the small Nexus Club in a chamber-music atmosphere; the second, that represents the heart of the festival, where the most important concerts are played.

The program of the 33rd edition offers a great variety of artists: Ches Smith, the drummer and his band; Mary Halvorson on guitar; Tony Malaby, the post-Coltraniane tenor sax player; the Gerry Hemingway Quintet with Oscar Noriega Ellery Eskelin and Kermit Driscoll; Aki Takase, Japanese pianist; Jenny Sheinman on violin; Giovanni Guidi on piano; Christian Muthspiel with Steve Swallow; Bruno Chevillon and Henry Texier.

Then, there were some tributes to great jazz artists: the most important is dedicated to the legendary AACM, with Muhal Richard Abrams Experimental Band, composed by some great heroes of international scene from 60s to the present. With Muhal, who is the guru of the Chicago Jazz, there are Henry Threadgill (tenor sax and flute), Roscoe Mitchell (alto sax), Wadada Leo Smith (trumpet), Amina Claudine Myers (piano), George Lewis (trombone), Leonard Jones (bass), Thurman Barker (vibes and percussion) and Reggie Nicholson (drums).

At the end, moreover, the festival was closed by Pharoah Sanders with Rob Mazurek's band, The Underground.

The Bologna MUSIC SHOW 1982

In 1982, during the Expo Fair in Bologna, there was a little festival, 'MUSIC SHOW'. For ten following nights there were some concerts of great music: a lot of international and Italian artists (as Frank Zappa, Rory Gallagher, John McLaughlin, The Police, Fleetwood Mac and Italian singer Claudio Baglioni) played on the stage of Area 48 of Expo Fair.
This fantastic experience was the firtst edition of MUSIC SHOW, that wasn't replayed till 2010.

Vol. 1: 1982-06-29 John McLaughlin & The Translators
Vol. 2: 1982-07-01 Rory Gallagher
Vol. 3: 1982-07-02 The Police
Vol. 4: 1982-07-04 Frank Zappa

I don't have the recordings of other shows and I don't know other dates of MUSIC SHOW.
If someone have some infos or missing shows about this festival, please contact:
